Becoming School Ready

Getting Ready for Nursery (Foundation 1)

Starting Nursery is an exciting milestone, and we work closely with families to help every child feel happy, confident, and ready for this important step. To make the transition smooth, we offer a range of supportive activities:

  • Home Visits: We visit each child at home before they start, giving families the chance to share important information and helping children feel comfortable about starting Nursery.
  • Drop-In Sessions: New cohorts are invited to come together with their parents and carers to meet each other, explore the setting, and play together.
  • Transition Sessions: Children spend time in Nursery with their peers, beginning to familiarise themselves with their new environment and routines.

We also provide Top Tips for Nursery, helping families and children prepare to make the very best start. Children are best prepared when they can play and explore with curiosity, start to share and take turns, and develop independence in simple routines, such as feeding themselves, tidying up, and putting on their coat.

Supporting Language and Reading at Home

Talking, singing, and sharing stories at home helps children build the early language skills they will use every day in Nursery. To support this, we provide Nursery Rhyme Bags for home, containing rhyme characters and prompt cards to inspire storytelling and playful learning.

We also invite parents and carers to join story reading sessions in school. During these sessions, our staff model fun and engaging ways to share stories—using expression, questions, and discussion to bring books to life. Parents can then take these ideas home, making bedtime reading a special and enjoyable part of their daily routine.

Together, we help every child grow up with a love of stories, strong early language skills, and a confident start to their Nursery journey.
