Early Maths
F2 Maths at FHAL
At FHAL in F2, we use the NCETM Mastering Number programme to support our maths teaching and learning. This approach, used nationally in Reception and Key Stage 1, helps children build a strong understanding of numbers—also known as “good number sense.” They learn to break numbers apart and put them back together again and to see how numbers relate to one another. This deep understanding lays a firm foundation for future success in maths.
What it looks like in F2
-
Children take part in four short Mastering Number sessions each week as their main number-based maths lessons. This gives them regular focused practice in number sense and calculation.
-
They use concrete materials such as rekenreks to actively explore numbers. This develops fluency, flexibility and confidence and also supports mathematical vocabulary and speaking skills.
-
Mastering Number principles are also woven into our daily classroom routines and continuous provision, so maths becomes a natural and enjoyable part of everyday learning.
Why this matters for your child
-
NCETM materials ensure consistent high-quality maths across all ages, from Early Years through to Year 6, so children experience smooth progress and continuity.
-
The programme builds fluency, flexibility and the ability to apply maths in real-life situations—not just counting.
-
Schools using Mastering Number report that children talk about numbers more confidently, show deeper understanding and achieve stronger outcomes in Early Years and Key Stage 1.
In summary: Through NCETM’s Mastering Number, children at FHAL in F2 are learning to become confident and flexible with numbers—all through engaging, active and purposeful learning. It is maths with heart and meaning, laying strong foundations for their future learning journey.
