Autumn Term Enquiry: Where do I belong?

This term, children continue to explore their family and people who are important to them, building on learning from Foundation 1. They will think about significant events in their own lives, such as birthdays, Christmas, and Bonfire Night, and begin to explore what caused these events, like the story of Guy Fawkes.

Children will also investigate their local community, learning about important individuals such as local leaders, athletes and community figures. They will start to compare similarities and differences and use new vocabulary such as older and younger.

This enquiry lays the foundation for future learning about the history of their local area, significant events, and famous people, helping children understand how they belong in their wider community.

Spring Term Enquiry: What is beyond our front door?

This term, children explore the world beyond their local area. They will learn the name of the country they live in and use maps to find it. They will also look at a nearby city, Nottingham, and compare it to their town of Mansfield, noticing how cities, towns, and villages are different.

Children will explore local landmarks such as Sherwood Forest, Nottingham Castle and the River Trent, and will be introduced to aerial images to see how places are organised. They will continue to develop their understanding of the wider world, including other countries and landscapes.

Summer Term Enquiry: Am I too small to make a difference?

This term, children explore how they can make an impact through creativity and caring for the world around them. In Art, they will study the artist David Miller, who creates underwater-themed artworks, and use his work as inspiration to make their own pieces. They will discuss their creations and compare them with Miller’s, reflecting on how art can express ideas and feelings.
