Autumn Term Enquiry: What is my story?

This term our youngest children begin to explore their own story and start to understand the idea of the past. They think about what happened “yesterday” and learn about special events in their own lives, such as birthdays and family celebrations.

We also explore important community events like Christmas, Bonfire Night and Remembrance Day, as well as festivals from different religions including Eid, Diwali and Hanukkah. This helps children recognise that people celebrate in different ways and encourages them to value and respect different traditions.

Through these experiences, children start to build an awareness of time, community, and celebration, laying the foundations for their history and RE learning as they move through school.

Spring Term Enquiry: Where will our travels take us?

This term the children build on their Autumn learning about their local area by exploring more about the town they live in. They think about familiar places such as farms, garages, hospitals, and parks, and begin to understand that they live in the town of Mansfield, in the Ladybrook area.

The children are also introduced to the idea of a “country” as a bigger place where people live. They start by learning about England, their own country of origin, before looking at another country – Brazil. Using photographs and stories, they compare what life looks like in England and Brazil, noticing similarities and differences.

Through this enquiry, children begin to develop geographical awareness and a sense of place in the wider world, preparing them for future learning about villages, cities, counties, and continents as they move through school.

Summer Term Enquiry: How do I make my mark?

This term the children begin to explore how artists are inspired by the natural world and why it is important to look after it. They will learn about the artist Jackson Pollock and his work Butterflies, looking closely at the techniques he used.

Inspired by his artwork, the children will experiment with their own creative techniques and make their own butterfly art. This gives them the chance to express themselves, be imaginative, and take pride in what they create.

Through this enquiry, children start to see how art can be used to celebrate and care for nature, laying the foundations for future art projects across school.
