Autumn Term Enquiry: Is Change Always for the Better?
This term, children explore the end of the Roman era and the beginning of the Anglo-Saxon period in Britain. They will learn how the Anglo-Saxons invaded, settled and divided the country into kingdoms such as East Anglia, Mercia, Northumbria and Wessex. Children will also study the religion of paganism and its transition to Christianity, comparing Anglo-Saxon society with the Romans.
Through History, Art and Science, children will investigate daily life, leadership and the lasting impact of these early societies. Geography links include observing the land use of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and understanding how communities were organised. This enquiry lays the foundations for exploring Viking invasions and later historical events.
Spring Term Enquiry: How Do We Know If We Weren’t There?
This term, children continue their study of the Anglo-Saxons and examine the impact of Viking invasions. They will learn about key leaders, such as Eric Bloodaxe and the last Anglo-Saxon King, Harold Godwinson, and explore battles including Lindisfarne and Hastings. Children will compare Anglo-Saxon and Viking societies, investigating how leadership and conflict shaped history.
Through History, Art, DT, and Geography, children will consider sources of evidence, timelines, and the reliability of historical information. This enquiry prepares them for studying life and war in later periods, such as WWII, and encourages reflection on cause, consequence, and societal change.
Summer Term Enquiry: The Earth Is Changing: Why Should We?
This term, children focus on the environment and human impact on the Earth. They will explore deforestation, changes in the rainforest, and how human activities affect climate and animal habitats. Children will consider the causes of environmental change and form opinions about climate change and sustainability.
Through Geography and Science, children will link environmental knowledge to human actions and the global community. DT provides opportunities to think about solutions and responsible living. This enquiry prepares children for Year 6 studies on global fairness, trade, and environmental stewardship.
