English as an Additional Language

At The Flying High Academy Ladybrook, we are proud of the rich linguistic diversity within our community. With over 80 pupils speaking 22 different home languages, multilingualism is recognised and celebrated as a strength. Rooted in our core value of Care and our commitment to Belonging, we ensure that every child feels known, valued and empowered to thrive. We follow evidence-informed principles, including guidance from The Bell Foundation, to maintain high expectations alongside appropriate support. Language development is embedded across our ambitious curriculum, with explicit vocabulary teaching, dual coding, structured talk and purposeful scaffolding enabling pupils to access academic content while developing English proficiency. We use high-quality resources such as Polylino to support home language development and reading engagement, recognising that a child’s first language is central to their identity and success. Through careful assessment, inclusive practice and strong partnerships with families, we ensure that pupils who use English as an Additional Language are fully included in school life and supported to achieve their full potential.
